D-I-Why Not?

Did you know that 2/3 of all PET plastic (soft drink, water bottles, etc) that are put in the recycler end up in the landfills and our oceans? There's a reason for the phrase Reduce, Reuse, Recycle... in that order. Here's a great way to reuse your glass beer and water bottles in just a few simple steps with easy to find materials.

Materials

Glass Beer Bottle
Masking Tape
Glass Cutter
Sand Paper (various grits)
Large pot

Instructions

Apply tape around bottle for a cutting guide
With controlled force, score a ring around the bottle
Place bottle in freezer for 5 minutes
In the meantime, boil water in large pot
Remove frozen bottle and run hot water over the scored crack
Alternate running cold water over crack
Repeat hot, then cold, then hot, etc. until top falls off
Sand edge smooth with a variety of sand paper grits
Enjoy responsibly

Well done, Awesome idea!! You can also do this the pyro way: You'll need.... -A bucket of cold water -An appropriate length of cotton fabric -Rubbing alcohol (NO GASOLINE!!) -A lighter or fire-maker of choice -Sandpaper -Oven mitt or an insatiable craving for pain. -A brave friend standing close by with a fire extinguisher. -First, find a safe place where no surroundings can possibly catch on fire. -Dip a piece of fabric long enough to wrap around the bottle in rubbing alcohol. -Tie it around the place of the bottle you wish to break. -LIGHT ALCOHOL DRENCHED COTTON ON FIRE!! (use caution) -Wait till it has burned for 30 seconds or so. -Blow out fire. Don't put water on it unless necessary (ex. if your house is burning down). -Carefully (preferably with oven mitts) pick up bottle by the bottom and dip into cold bucket top first. -If done correctly the top should simply pop off. -Then sand appropriately. Good luck. Don't hurt yourself.

Hi. See, what happens with the paper labels? Is there a way to kind of seal them from water? I mean when you wash your glass after using it. Someone said to apply a water-glue mixture, would that work?
