So i have to chime in on the WCT contest that just went down in Portugal which happens to be my favorite event on the world tour. In case you have been living in a box you know that the golden child from Noosa Julian Wilson took the event in what some are calling “the darkest day in surf contest judging history”.

After watching the majority of the event I saw Brazilian wiz kid Gabriel Medina tear through each of his heats pretty much smoking everyone in his way. I would say Julian as well, smoked all who challenged him as well. So the final was set and it was on. The much hated Brazilian contingent was represented and it was good vs. evil. The handsome Julian against darth vader himself Medina.

The final was pretty one sided in my eyes, funky cold was pretty much doing what he had done all contest, just lighting it up. Although not much the fan of his surfing & style gotta give props when due, the kid rips in critical situations. I felt it wasnt even close and figured it was over. Then Mr. Perfect got a head-dip to a tic-tac to a claim that to me was a 5 to 6 on the score chart. OVer Medina wins. But apparently the judges preferred Julian’s overall performance and in the last 10 seconds gave him the score for his first WCT event title. Wohhhhhh. That was weird i thought. WTF! Not sure what they were thinking on that call but there is some fucked up shit going on in that booth for sure.

Although Gabriel pouted like a baby the whole trophy ceremony, i totally understand why he would have. The kids just 19 or 20 years old or something, i woulda cried like an infant too. The picture of them 2 standing together tells it all. But All in all, i guess the WCT will just have to over score Medina for the next year or so just to make up for this enormous blooper, fuuuuuuuu. At the end of the day, Julian Wilson is by far and away the more handsome of the 2 surfers, so i guess that’s something to be said.
